1994 MTV Video Music Awards

So 3 Jewish Italians and a Punk walk into a Bar(Mitzvah)…

Throwback: 8th September 1994
Event: MTV VMAs (Video Music Awards)
Location: Radio City Music Hall, Manhattan, New York City
Attendance: 6,000 guests
Back to the Future: Kidnappers threaten Bill Ray Cyrus to either chop off the mullet or baby Miley gets abducted, the mullet sadly comes off and the (online) world is set to be disturbed 20 years later at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards with the shameful introduction of ‘Twerking’.

And the nominees for the most annoying musicians are…

Growing up in the 1990’s, a lot of people seem to be forgetting that this year marks the 20th anniversary of (one of) the most significant year(s) in alternative music (with the death of grunge, re-birth of punk and indie acts ironically hitting mainstream, while Oasis and Blur were leading the re-emergence of the Brit-Pop Invasion in the UK). In the 90’s, as most of our Generation (Y) know, MTV (the ‘M’ hopefully still stands for Music’) was arguably the only major ‘visual’ source of introducing new music to the masses. VH1 (Video Hits One) and MuchMoreMusic probably being MTV’s only main competitors, never really came close to having that same global impact in broadcasting and delivering pop culture/modern music industry to the Millennials.

MTV

MTV (R.I.P 1981 – 2001)

Since 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the MTV VMA’s, I thought it’s time I wrote a post about exactly what the Video Music Awards are all about. Although, I really couldn’t care less about Music Award shows as the voting systems are usually rigged and all the politics involved in electing the winners is most-likely based on which genre (and their respective artist) can cash in the most views and $ bills), plus everyone has their own opinions on who’s the King of Pop (Michael Jackson), Queen of Pop (Madonna) and the Rock n’ Roll King (Elvis), etc.

MTV Moon Man

However, since 1994 was such an excitingly hectic yet tragically fragile year in alternative/mainstream music, the MTV VMAs (Video Music Awards) that year (in my opinion) were an exception. Since the VMAs were celebrating their 10th birthday, (the first award show in 1984, was punctuated by a live performance from Madonna of Like A Virgin) the Beavis and Butthead Generation (aka Slackers) were lucky to be experiencing the channel at its peak before Carson Daly’s TRL (Total Request Live) and the ironically fake scripted bullshit Reality Show era kicked in and cursed the music channels original business model into oblivion.

Beavis and Butthead (1993 - 1997)

Beavis and Butt-Head (1993 – 1997)

The 1994 MTV Video Music Awards aired live on September 8th, honouring the best music videos between the Summers of 1993 to the Summer of that year. The show was (unfortunately) hosted by the not-so funny Roseanne Barr at the annual award show’s most common re-occurring venue Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley opened the show by the King of Pop giving a speech after receiving a standing ovation as they walked on stage hand-in-hand. Ending their introduction to the show by turning to the audience and proclaiming, “and just think, nobody thought this would last,” before kissing Elvis’s daughter in front of all the (musical) guests creating typical havoc in the pop culture tabloid industry. Everyone who still watches (or use to watch) the channel, knows that the MTV VMAs are known for their controversial moments that happen every year live at the venue (and the pre-show red-carpet) whether the guests antics are staged or not, they always seem to create publicity, regardless of it being positive or negative (mostly the later) and ultimately benefit the artist popularity.

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley

One controversial moment that was huge at the time, was at the 1992 VMAs. MTV had prohibited Nirvana from performing ‘Rape Me’ as the band was forced to play ‘Lithium’ to satisfy the nervous network. Nevertheless, Kurt Cobain strummed a few chords of (and sang the words) ‘Rape Me’ to piss off the execs, before launching into ‘Lithium’. As if that wasn’t enough, at the end of the song, bassist Krist Novoselic tossed his guitar in the air, only to catch it with his face, as he stumbled off the stage in a daze, while Kurt trashed the amps like a true rock star that he was and drummer Dave Grohl ran to the mic to repeatedly yell, ‘Hi Axl!’ over an altercation between Axel Rose and Kurt Cobain.

After Nirvana had previously declined Guns N’ Roses offer to support them on tour, Axel met the Nirvana lead singer and his wife Courtney Love back-stage at the 92 VMAs, where Courtney asked Axel, if he would like to be their daughter, Frances Bean’s Godfather. Axel told Kurt to tell his ‘bitch to shut up’ or he would challenge Kurt to a fight. The idea that anyone could control Courtney Love was so laughable that a giant smile came to Kurt’s face before he turned to Courtney and ordered her, ‘Okay, bitch. Shut up!’.

Kurt Cobain MTV VMA 1992

However, out of all the notorious, lame, shocking or cool controversial moments that have happened in the history of the VMAs in last 30 years, Kanye West’s controversial incident at the 2009 VMAs was the worst. When Taylor Swift was making her acceptance speech for winning Best Female Video for some stupid song, West got on the stage and interrupted her by grabbing the microphone from her and said, ‘Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!’ referring to her music video for (All the) ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’ before a camera zoomed in on a stunned Beyoncé.

Kanye’s outburst at the 2009 VMAs was so big, that he was criticized for it by everyone, (this may have been the introductory hallmark to his delusional arrogance and huge ego), the incident was parodied by several musicians at different award ceremonies, an internet meme consisting of an image of KW imposed onto other images with his quote, ‘I’mma let you finish but…’ spread like an online virus, even President Obama got involved and gave West criticism in (an off the record part of) an interview, saying, ‘You know, it was like, she’s getting an award and what are you butting in for? The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person, she’s getting her award and what’s he doing up there? He’s a jackass!’ West consequently apologised to Swift several times, but we all know the Country singer wasn’t really the innocent victim, with her music hitting an all-time new low now (sex sells) just like every other (fe)male new-comer in the pop culture. On a side note, South Park’s FishSticks episode on Season 13 featuring a (mermaid) Kanye West, which aired few months before the 2009 VMAs, became a huge hit after his awards outburst and due to the simple ‘fishstick’ innuendo/joke (What are you a gay fish?). So now we know the impact of MTV controversy on the music industry.

Kanye West VS Taylor Swift (2009 MTV VMAs)

Back to 1994, on another notable controversial VMA moment, David Letterman escorted Madonna onto the stage and told the singer to watch her language, poking fun at Madonna’s controversial appearance on the his Late Show earlier that Spring.

The performances that night consisted of 12 artists ranging from an eclectic variety of genres and backgrounds:

  1. Aerosmith – Walk This Way
  2. Boyz II Men – I’ll Make Love to You
  3. The Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm
  4. The Rolling Stones – Love Is Strong/Start Me Up
  5. Green Day – Armatage Shanks
  6. Beastie Boys – Sabotage
  7. Alexandrov Red Army Leningrad Cowboys – Sweet Home Alabama (cover)
  8. Salt-n-Pepa – Push It/None of Your Business/Whatta Man/Shoop
  9. Tom Petty & the HeartBreakers –  Mary Jane’s Last Dance
  10. Snoop Dogg – Murder Was the Case (Death After Visualizing Eternity)
  11. Stone Temple Pilots – Pretty Penny
  12. Bruce Springsteen – Streets of Philadelphia

However, I’m only discussing 3 of the above, as I’m only interested in the following;

Green Day

‘My Own Worst Friend, My Own Closest Enemy’

This was Green Day’s first live performance at a televised award show. Apparently the band was meant to perform their next big single hit/music video Basket Case but decided to be true to their ‘unpredictable punks’ ethos and treat the award show with an unreleased song called Armatage Shanks. I find it highly amusing that instead of playing a timeless catchy song about anxiety and panic disorder, the band ended up playing a new song about your life going down the drain, hence the song named after the British toilet company, Armitage Shanks. The word ‘Armitage’ would be purposefully mis-spelled to avoid using the trademark. There is a legend that Armstrong read the name of the brand in a London toilet and then decided to use it as a song title but here’s the ironic twist, they’re playing a song about his life being a failure at an award show.  Armitage Shanks ended up being the intro track to Green Day’s fourth (most aggressive/metal sounding) album ‘Insomniac’ which wasn’t released for another year until October 1995.

Armatage Shanks is a great introduction to Insomniac, an album that was written during the Dookie World Tour when the band were going through some harsh confusing criticism for supposedly selling-out to the mainstream by signing to a major record label in 1993. Therefore, Insomniac is filled with songs about insecurity, panic disorder and doubt. In Armatage Shanks, Billie Joe is saying that he doesn’t trust anyone, let alone himself and calls himself a ‘loner in a claustrophobic mind’. He expresses his distrust and irritation by saying ‘I must insist on being a pessimist’. There’s no one to trust, nothing makes sense, so being pessimistic is not just a current state of mind, it ultimately becomes an ideology.

Billie Joe Armstrong

The Fernandes Stratocaster which Armstrong received at the age of 10 before his father died in 1982

‘When I wrote that song it was right before Dookie came out in 1994 and I was really at odds with myself. I was like, man, do I really want to do this? A lot of the time I was thinking about suicide, how it’s so easy to kill yourself, but so hard to stay alive. I was in a break-up with my then-girlfriend, a total raving punk rocker, who didn’t approve of me being on a major label. She moved down to Ecuador, saying she couldn’t live in a world with McDonald’s and such. It was fucking me up pretty bad’.

– Billie Joe Armstrong (Geek Stink Breath)

This is allegedly the same ex-girlfriend who inspired the global hit ballad Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) a.k.a Go Fuck Yourself, She and Stuart and the Ave.

Billie Joe Armstrong

I must insist on being a pessimist…

Beastie Boys

‘Can’t Stand It, I Know You Planned It’

1994 was a huge year for these 3 Jewish Italians from New York City as their fourth album, Ill Communication released a bunch of great singles, most notably, ‘Sabotage’ whose music video was directed by Spike Jonez which was a homage to, and parody of 70’s Crime Drama shows such as Starsky & Hutch, SWAT, etc. presented as the opening credits of a fictional 1970’s style police show called Sabotage. The music video became an iconic timeless piece of art and was nominated 5 times for a number of ‘Best Of’ Categories but lost them all to R.E.M’s ‘Everybody Hurts’ and AeroSmith’s ‘Cryin’.

The Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys

Most people probably don’t know but the Beastie Boys started off as an underground punk band in the early 1980’s and watching the video of them performing this at the VMAs as a 3 Piece (Guitar/Bass/Drum) rock band is just amazing. I read somewhere online few years ago that Billie Joe had requested the Beastie Boys, if Green Day can perform before them, because he was so intimidated to follow up after such an iconic 80’s Hip-Hop group.

The Smashing Pumpkins

‘The Killer in Me, is the Killer in You, My Love’

The band, apparently wanted to perform a different song from their 1993 sophomore album, Siamese Dream, but was forced by the Music Channel’s Executives to play and promote the gloomy MTV hit, Disarm. Burnt receding hair lined Billy Corgan and Co. ended up playing a heavier version of the song (which was actually the original/demo version) to piss off the VMAs organisers and left the stage making a scene leaving an irritated/satirical impression on the viewers by trashing their instruments like true rock stars.

At the end of the day, I think some of the performers that night had a grey cloud of bleakness and a sense of aggressiveness in their performances and attitudes due to Cobain’s death in April which pretty much broke down the whole house Grunge had built and brought a frown in the alternative scene in 1994.

Nirvana accpted an award for Best Alternative Video and a Tribute was paid to Kurt Cobain.

I definitely agree with your last your last remark about the quality of pop culture deteriorating! And I could always care less about award shows too… until Tom Petty gave me a ticket to the 1995 Grammys and then it seemed much more interesting. I mean who is going to pass up encountering Dave Grohl at a record label after party when one can stop, lock eyes, and stare at the guy like he’s the only other person there with your same hairstyle? I wasn’t “starstruck” I was just thinking we had the same braids… like how women face off when they find out they are wearing the same dress… too funny.

And you made miss Adam Yauch (Beastie Boys founding member) because I remember when they first came out (although we didn’t think they were punk… we thought they were white boy rap) and every morning, I watched my friend put on the tune about fighting for our right to party…and she’d melt her eye liner with a lighter so she’d get it very punk rock before we walked to our drivers ed class! LOL. Nice to see a mention for BB. They were compatible with our punk rock and goth bands… but we saw them as utilizing rap and scratching records.

I’m totally enjoying your essays. It’s an oddly foreign experience reading one’s histories being reported by people who weren’t there. I mean this in a good way not that you’re getting it “wrong” at all. It’s just a completely different feeling reading from someone else’s timeline… and I think this is good to know when I write about histories too. Thanks again for sharing the link.

Wow, that’s really fortuitous how Tom Petty of all people gives you a ticket to the Grammys of all shows! I wonder what series of events took place that lead you to that moment of strange luck? So did you get to see (and talk) to 26 year old Dave Grohl?!

Speaking of Petty and Grohl, in my ‘Big Me to Talk About It’ (Cobain 1994 – 2014) blog post, I shorty mention how Grohl wanted to give up on music after Cobain’s death and how he got several offers to play for other bands until he made his first post-Nirvana TV appearance by playing drums for Tom Petty and the HeartBreakers at Saturday Night Live (SNL) in late 1994.

Yeah, now that I think about it, Beastie Boys and Eminem are the only two white Hip-Hop artists that pulled it off in making it to the top in this ‘black dominant’ genre in the music industry, not that ethnicity matters but I’d say it was a big deal back then and still is quite an achievement!

Well, what can I say? It makes me happy to see that someone out there in the world enjoys reading these blog pieces, as much as I enjoyed writing them. It just haunts me to think, while all my favourite musicians were at the peak of their careers, I was just a kid playing Super Nintendo not knowing what was happening around the (music) world, as my earliest memories of music go back to 1993, with music videos of the following being played on MTV in the background,

      1) Meat Loaf – I’d do Anything for Love (but I won’t do that)
      2) Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You
      3) Pet Shop Boys – Go West (Cover)

Unfortunately, no sign of Nirvana but that Meat Loaf video gave me nightmares!

So I guess, out of all the essays I’ve written for my blog, this one is the last one to take you on a nostalgic trip down memory lane, as it covers a lot of juicy facts about one of the most legendary rock music festivals in the world.

I went to college with his daughter. My boyfriend at the time was playing music with her boyfriend at the time. So when they introduced us, she liked my artwork and asked me to help her make student films and before I knew who she was related to, she saw I had a Rollingstone magazine picture of her dad on my dorm wall so she told him about it… Tom was so happy to hear the “young people” actually liked his music. He is one of the most humble, generous, kind people you’ll ever meet. His daughter is one of the smartest women I’ve ever met. So… I was an artist among them… At the time I got to go to the Grammy’s, I’d graduated and was working for Jeff Koons the conceptual american artist, as a color mixer and a painter in his “factory”. New York is small. It has opportunities. I got some scholarships but I was a financial aid student… from a small blue collar town 3,500 miles west of the Big Apple… so it was lucky but I worked hard to get there. All things are possible. In answer to your question about Dave… nope, we didn’t speak. Whitney was at that Grammy event tho. She was very smiley when the cameras were rolling and incredibly mean when the cameras were off. My keyboard is not allowing line breaks so I apologize for all of this running together… I think in most cases of rap ethnicity does matter to be true to rap…and it sometimes doesn’t matter when the genre goes global and goes thru natural phases of appropriation and or modes of fusion. Music should lend vocabularies and change but the origins matter. Because once we don’t know what the symbols or words mean, it fails in it’s art form. Basic dance beats are okay for disco but the personal narratives in rap should refer to something beyond pop culture. Something beyond marketability. So… something beyond forbes magazine basically elevating Iggy Azalea to the queen of hip hop just because she “sounds” like rap and wraps her p***Y around a pole they’ve invested in. Sorry to be crass… delete/edit as you see fit. I hope you will write more nostalgic as well as modern music posts… and look forward to this link. I love how you had meatloaf nightmares! I mean not that you suffered, but what a marvelous expression. Pet Shop Boys were hugely played in my household…by my brother… I feel I was brainwashed into acceptance, but they aren’t half bad really. Thank you for some fun music dialogue. 🙂

Wow! You got to work for Jeff Koons! You should upload some of your artwork and the videos you helped with, on YouTube! I’m guessing Adria Petty is one of the two daughters of Tom, who you went to college with. If so, I just checked out her Wikipedia page and she has quite an impressive arsenal of clients in the music industry under her belt, for the work she’s done on their music videos. A lot of Regina Spektor and a bit of Beyoncé too!

Yeah, recently Iggy Azalea has been under some heat over her Hip-Hop roots, since she’s from Australia and is obviously putting on that gangster rap accent. Although the same can be said for the background of most pop(ular) artists; Lana Del Rey, a complete dramatic transformation of a rich daddy’s girl, disguised as someone who grew up broke or lived in a trailer park (for musical inspiration) and Miley Cyrus, a Disney kid gone wild, the list of hypocrisy goes on!

Ha, I never thought I’d read the words ‘Small’ and ‘New York’ in the same sentence. It’s been my life long dream to live (and work) in New York City but I feel like I’m not quite ready yet! Nevertheless, for a week or two of holidays, I shall finally be visiting NYC for the first time in my life this Summer, which will also be a dream come true!

Speaking of which, when you get the time, leave a comment and let me know what you think of my blog post on the Woodstock Festival, which took place on the outskirts of the Big Apple.

Yes, Adria was a couple years behind me but when I met her she was taking a class with a film teacher I had also taken… and she has an incredible eye for film. She actually taught me more than my film teacher, although his lessons were invaluable. She just has a knack for it and she wanted to do her own work, different than her father, although she actually has a great singing voice. Anyhow… not to go on too much about her. Her privacy is more important to me than impressing anybody. I maintain my original statement that people love videos and MTV dropped the ball with a lot of empty excuses (although I know you are right about what happened in marketing and reality shows). It was VH1 that played most of Tom Petty’s videos anyhow. And since they have someone like Adria in the video making business they should be good to go. She’s very talented. I’m entirely ready for her to take over that part of the empire. 🙂

New York is long and skinny in terms of Manhattan so the grid is really easy to learn. Subways take you everywhere… so when I mean small, I mean it’s very accessible. You don’t get easily lost there. And since it’s so interesting anywhere you go, it’s easy to take on. It was different before 911 tho. Now everything is on camera. But it’s still New York and you will love it when you visit. It was my dream to live and work there too after high school. It was ready or not here I come! Going to college there helped the process… the campus life felt like a step between leaving home and joining the real world. It was almost real but it was an insulated version in many ways.

I’m not sure I want to post my work on line, but thanks for your interest. Technology doesn’t serve my art purposes. I find that technology loses the art. The impact is gone and the intention rarely matters in the ocean of online art where are levels intermingle without very good organization. I understand why people use it for career portfolios. I’m all for what they want to do. But I am a purest. Not quite a luddite but embarking on something that feels more real to me. I worked for the Pollack Krasner Foundation in New York as well, which gives grants to working artists and so I learned a lot about the different sides of it. All of my work experiences were really excellent ones that I truly enjoyed, but the business of art is different than what an artist is. However, I will find some of Jeff’s pieces from the show I worked on.

And yes, I will soon take a look at your woodstock festival post. I have thoughts about that festival pre-reading, so we’ll see what I find out from you! Thanks. 🙂

Apologies for the late reply! The 9-to-5 Life ain’t pretty!

Cool, I didn’t even know Video Hits One (VH1) was still around! I presumed MTV acquired them, since VH1 was pretty much their only major and oldest competitor in the ‘music video’ television channel business.

Yeah, looking at Google Maps, I noticed how all the streets in NYC are so organised and planned out in a consistent grid, which would make getting around so easy and getting lost so rare!

So would you still consider yourself an artist or is that your current profession?

P.s. did you delete your blog!?!

                No apologies necessary.

Yes I am still very much an artist.

Yes, I have removed my blog. Not just deleted posts, but discontinued. I have a lot of things happening right now and simply don’t have time for it. But I have the Gravatar that never dies apparently and access to read and comment on other blogs.

If I do my own blog again, I want to format it very differently. So I’d need time to figure out my intention before jumping in. I feel like my first blog was for learning about public blogging and for practice. Right now it isn’t a priority for me, as more serious work has come up and I have to take it.

Eventually, I will find time to read your blog again! And I will let you know if and when I have one going in the future. I’m so sorry for the quick how do ya do and disappearing act! I wasn’t planning on that at all.

Above is a link to Ms Applesauce. She is living in Hong Kong and is fairly new to music but she would probably benefit from your extra info on bands. She commented the most about music and whatever tangents that occurred more than most people and so I encourage you to check out her global video tour… and see if you want to input or add her to your wordpress community.

Thanks for taking some real time for a dialogue and keep up your good work! I am happy to have met you. 🙂

  2. That’s weird the referrer only popped up today! Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun reading your “recap”… especially learning about that Kurt/Axl thing haha. Was pleasantly surprised to learn more about Green Day’s vocalist (nice selection on the “pessimist” lyrics btw!) The only time I came across The Smashing Pumpkins was when I saw them on my drums sheet music (“Cherub Rock” was the song I think), other than that, IIRC somewhere the vocalist felt pressured on the band’s comparison to Nirvana and feeling like having to live up to it?

Also, just wondering who you think “should” be the King/Quenn of Pop & Rock n Roll? (If you do not agree with the MJ/Madonna/Elvis title that is)

      Hey Ms AppleSauce!

Apologies for the late response. I’ve been meaning to reply back to you sooner but the 9-to-5 life has taken over my existence and energy to enjoy my free time and ultimately, my motivation to dedicate some quality time to my blog and followers!

Yes, KatherineJLegry (SkinnyNeck.wordpress.com) found my blog through one of my Kurt Cobain posts from January and what started off as a mis-understanding of constructive criticism, turned into a friendly exchange of nostalgia and memories about 90’s alternative music. She had recommended me to check out your blog after I discovered she deleted her blog due to life getting in the way.

I am glad to read you enjoyed reading my ’94 VMAs’ blog piece. You might also like reading my other similar/related posts that can be found at the end of this blog piece (above the comment section). Yeah, I’m a huge Green Day fan and know more about them than I should. I was lucky enough to sing for them at one of their live shows back in 2009 in my hometown, Dublin during their ’21st Century Breakdown’ European Tour. In regards to the Smashing Pumpkins, although Billy Corgan is (was) a musical genius, he is quite egocentric and believes Nirvana and his band were the only two artists within the Grunge era that wrote great rock tunes.

Ah, I’m pretty happy with my sentiment of who’s the King of Pop (Michael Jackson), Queen of Pop (Madonna) and the Rock n’ Roll King (Elvis Presley).

      • It’s ok! Life’s been in the way for me to blog much these days as well…

I’ve never been much of a fan of Green Day myself. I mean, I KNOW everyone practically /loves/ them when they were at their pinnacle and with “American Idiot” (I was a HUGE Harry Potter fan and when I was reading Daniel Radcliffe’s interview, he said his favourite band atm was Green Day) but for some reason… their music never clicked to me? “21 Guns” helped me when I was a bit gloomy back then but I never found their music to be catchy. Maybe it was because they were more of the “newer” rock bands..? But lucky for you though! I’d probably be too scared or have a bad timing of self-esteem issue if I ever got to sing for my favourite band!

I got the impression that Billy Corgan was a bit egocentric but I never knew he was THAT egocentric! Almost makes Kanye look like an angel ahaha

Ok I’ll check out your similar posts! ‘is fun learning new things 🙂
